The Yellow Striped Road

I'm so excited that Alicia and Kristi chose one of my photos as one of their top 5 photos for this weeks photo challenge.  I don't know how they choose from all the great submissions they get every week!  Thank you ladies!!  Please visit Alicia's or Kristi's blogs to see the other beautiful photos selected this week!

Friday starts the photo challenges for the month of July! Can you believe we've already made it to another July? We're half way through a year!

 This month's themes are:

Week 5, 1st- Light
Week 6, 8th- Patriotism
Week 7, 15th- Critters
Week 8, 22nd- Motion
Week 9, 29th- Bubbles

I can't wait to get started on the next themes and see what others capture too!

Seriously?!

I was actually excited about what is normally a mundane trip to the doctor's office this morning.  At last week's visit he told me that I'd already effaced 60% and had managed to dilate to a measly 1cm.  I thought FOR SURE that after all the walking, moving, shaking, and laughing I did this weekend that I would have made it to at least 3cm.

Nope.

Barely moved in the thinning out department (now at 70%-ish) and no change at all in the dilated department.  No. Change.  Blah...  I'm trying to tell myself that she's just hanging out 'cause for some reason she doesn't want to put up with her siblings, but really I think she might just be procrastinating like her Momma.  I'm a procrastinator extraordinaire.  Good to know she's already taking after me though...

On the GD front, I have my 4th glucose test on Friday.  The 2nd three hour test of this pregnancy.  I asked the doc about that.  I wanted to know just how bad my blood sugar levels were.  I was greatly relieved when he told me they weren't actually bad, but just above what they would consider "normal".  He told me that I shouldn't worry, but just stick to the diet as best I could.  He told me he knows how hard it can be.

I have been trying people.  I really, REALLY, have.  That Starbucks I had on Sunday was their "light" version.  I didn't even know they offered light versions of their drinks, but they do.  They use sugar free syrup, low fat milk, and will forego the whipped cream if you ask.  Makes me love their overpriced coffee even more!  I've made sure to eat more fruits and veggies and I'm making a big effort to stay away from all things full of refined sugars.  I've even stopped buying the good cereal.  I'm now forcing my children to eat things like Wheaties and Raisin Bran.  They aren't happy with me, but they're eating it.

So that's where we are...  Thursday will be the start of week 38.  I keep thinking about my 1st daughter.  She was two weeks early.  At this time in her pregnancy, I had already dilated to 3-4cm and had been that way for a week.  We even went camping for a week to try to speed things up.  She came in her own time and I guess this little one will do the same.

This will possibly be the longest 2 weeks EVER.

Swimmin' in Ponds and Peeing Your Pants

Grain bins of my childhood | South Union, KY | Nelly Nero's Summer Vintage action (fast becoming my favorite action!)

This weekend was awesome!  It went by way too fast, but I enjoyed very nearly every minute of it!  A few weeks ago an old friend of mine contacted me via Facebook saying that she and her sister were planning to infiltrate her Momma's house.  She lives in Virginia and her sister lives in Arkansas and the whole family hadn't been together in about 15 years.  They needed a paparazzi.  It was supposed to be a surprise that I was coming, but once Momma Lynne found out everyone (brothers, sisters, grandkids, etc.) were coming, she was pretty insistent that they go have portraits made.  So.... no more secret!

Saturday was spent pretty much eating grilled hot dogs, brats, and burgers, swimming and fishing in ponds, doing hourly tick checks, and catching up with my two oldest friends.  Literally, I mean we were trying to decide just how long we had known each other and it turns out that it's before any of us can remember.  Either that means it's been a really long time or we're just getting old.  I'd like to go with the first option, thanks.  Surprisingly, all the kids got along better than expected!  Especially for never meeting each other before.  They hit it off great and were truckin' it through the woods and creeks looking for lizards and frogs before we knew it!  Suddenly Kaia has "cousins" she didn't know about and is planning her own trips back to the farm and to Arkansas.

Sunday I was so tired I didn't really want to get out of bed.  Mind you... I didn't actually DO anything on Saturday, but I had a long day of converting oxygen to carbon dioxide so...  The prospect of getting out of the house without any kids and splurging on some Starbucks coffee got me motivated though!  Another friend and I hit up the matinee to see "Bridesmaids".  It was HILARIOUS!  Everything that I had heard didn't even prepare me.  You've got to go see this.  And bring some Kleenex.  Not because it's a tear jerker, but because you'll be laughin' so hard you'll be crying.  I'd tell you that I laughed so hard that I peed my pants, but coughing/sneezing/giggling/and breathing make me do that at this point.  However, if you aren't like 8 and 3/4 months pregnant, you still might pee your pants!

You have been warned.

Crazy Days of Summer Week 4: Yellow

Look what I did!!!  I made a template!  Like the water template that Alicia shared last week.  You can download it here.  If you download and give it a try, let me know if it works 'cause I've never done anything of the sort before.

When I first saw those six letters I thought for sure I was a goner.  No way was I going to find things that were yeller around this place.  It's not one of my favorite colors.  I was actually surprised at the amount of yellow items I was able to find!  I guess because it's not one of my favorite colors I quite often overlook it.

Coffeeshop's Powder Room After Dark action and a few other tweaks...

No actions on this one!  Just a little sharpening and brightness level adjustments.

Coffeeshop's Powder Room After Dark and Urban Grit actions.

I have a new appreciation for the color yellow now!  Make sure to stop by Alicia's to check out the other great shots from this week's photo challenge!

What's your guess Wednesday!

I know this is supposed to be a photo post.  Sometimes with words, sometimes without words so here's a photo.
Way back in 2010....

Ok, so I know you are jealous of my super sexy self, right?  Just say yes and humor me.  I would have some new photos to post today, but I just haven't been in the photo taking mood this week.  To be honest.... I've been having contractions off and on for about a week now.

Don't freak out.  They aren't regular by any stretch of the word, but they haven't been pleasant either.  Just uncomfortable and random.  I was supposed to see the doc last Thursday (and ironically that's when they started), but the office called on Wednesday to reschedule saying the doc was going to be out of the office.  Yesterday was my new appointment and I'm down to going every week now.  I was supposed to do yet another glucose test.  I un-apologetically cheated on it.  I was up ALL NIGHT LONG with acid reflux like nobody's damn business and all I could think was, "I can't have anything to drink or eat."  Finally at 4am, I gave up, drank some water, and took some Maalox.  I couldn't help it!!  It felt like my throat was going to explode!  I did start drinking that nasty glucose solution on time, but I didn't force myself to chug it down in five minutes.  After about 15, I gave up on that too and only drank about 8 oz of a 10 oz bottle.  No, I didn't tell the doctor.  No, I don't really care.  Yes, I should care, but I don't.  So there...

Got on the scale... still 138lbs.  In three weeks I have gained....  ZERO WEIGHT!  Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch.  At least I haven't lost again, right?  I was obviously bummed by this number.  The nurse said that I had "gained 10 pounds so far" like that was a good number.  I'm like 3 and a half weeks from my due date and only gained 10 pounds...  I'm not thrilled with this.  Stupid diabetes diet....

Anyway...  I let the nurse know that I had been having sporadic (at least 6-8 a day) contractions so they could put it on my chart.  She told me that he would be doing an exam that day anyway so we were all good. Woo hoo...  Guess what?  All those sporadic contractions are actually doing something!  He said I was at 1 cm and had already effaced to 60%!  One centimeter doesn't seem like even worth measuring to me, but hey, it's progress.

My due date is July 15th, but I don't think she's going to wait that long.  My Mom's guess is either July 1st or July 7th.  My father-in-law says July 3rd.  My friend, Cam, says July 19th.  What's your guess?

The Reason We Get Along

Have you ever had so many words in your head that you worry they might accidentally just come rushing out?  I've always had, what I call, a brain/mouth malfunction.  I say what I'm thinking before I think about what I'm thinking.  It's like the path way from my brain to my mouth has no speed limit or regular law enforcement.  I've been trying to get a hold on it for a while now.  Trying to take that count to 10, take a deep breath approach.  Sometimes it works... most times it doesn't.

This is why I am so thankful for having a husband who is my best friend.  He does such a great job of feigning interest in my rants.  Knows just when to nod his head, when to say yes, I agree or the like.  His typical response is usually, "Don't worry about it." or "Just ignore it".  HE is my brain/mouth law enforcer.  He's also helping me remember that sometimes it's best just to fo-get-aboudit...

While I didn't blather on yesterday about what a great father/provider he is... (I posted about awesome no-bake cookies instead...)  I'm declaring today Brain/Mouth Law Enforcement day.  And he has been crowned my King.

No Bake Oatmeal Cookies

A super simple, easy to make, staple in any household, is the No Bake Oatmeal Cookies.  Since the temperature in my neck of the woods has been right about ... HELL... we don't want to be cranking up ye olde stove to heat the house up.  Easy answer... no bake cookies!

Print Friendly Version
What you need:

½ cup (1 stick) butter
2 cups granulated sugar
½ cup milk
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
½ cup peanut butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups quick-cooking oats

How to make 'em:

1. Add the butter, sugar, milk and cocoa powder to a 4-quart saucepan.
2. Bring to a rolling boil and let boil for 1 minute.
3. Remove from heat.
4. Stir in the peanut butter and vanilla until smooth, then stir in the oats.
5. Drop by heaping tablespoons onto wax paper-lined baking sheets.
6. Let cool until set.

The whole process takes about an hour. You'll get about 3 dozen cookies from this recipe. Depending on how big you make 'em!

Crazy Days of Summer Week 3: Water!

We've been spending tons of time outside this week. I originally had several things I had to do, but many of them ended up falling through, being rescheduled, or plans that just never got made. There is a good side to this though, we got to lounge around!

I came in at the end of last week's Crazy Days of Summer Photo Challenge so it kind of looks like I'm doing them back to back.  As hot as it's been all over the country this week, last week's theme and this week's them kind of go hand in hand.  I had a fun time trying to capture some water shots though.  Especially trying to keep my camera from getting all wet!

Another thing I'm struggling with... an old version (release date of 2002!) of Photoshop that I have.  I really am completely and utterly stupefied when it comes to something as technical as Photoshop.  I must break down and buy the newest version of PS Elements.  I think it would be easier and less stressful.  However, I'm super proud of myself for being able to figure out how to use the water template that Alicia shared.  You can find it here.

Crazy Days of Summer - Refreshing!

Alicia from Project Alicia and Kristi from Live and Love Out Loud are having a Crazy Days of Summer photo challenge.  I missed the first week, which was flowers. I guess it's a good thing though because NONE of the flowers in our yard have bloomed this year. We have a peony that always has tons and tons of flowers, but this year not a single flower!  This week's theme is/was "Refreshing".

We used to have a semi-big pool.  We started with one of those 12ft. Easy Set pools a few years ago then upgraded to a 15ft. one.  The kids have more than outgrown it, sadly.  And it developed the world's smallest inaccessible hole.  We were planning to purchase a larger one this year, but the daunting task of finding a level enough spot in our yard OR hauling in sand and leveling a spot was just too much for one man to do.  Look out next year yard, you're getting a makeover a'la new pool!  This year has already been so hot and stifling.  The sprinkler just wasn't cutting it anymore.  I told the husband to grab the cheapest pool that we could just dip in and jump out of with minimal setup.  Voila!  $20 two ring blow up pool.  The photo featured on the webpage IS NOT ACCURATE at all.  It says it's "ideal for 3 children and 2 adults to swim".  Uh... no way, no how.  Now listen I wasn't expecting that all four (and a half!) of us would be able to even sit in the thing comfortably, but I really want to call Walmart and complain of the false advertising of the images depicted for their pools.  However, it serves it's purpose and it was only $20.

Ahhh.... refreshing!!!
Obviously, it's Neil approved.

The contest runs from 12:00am Friday - 11:59pm Wednesday.  Next week's theme, Week 3 - June 17th is Water.  Get your cameras clicking, then head over and add your photos to the blog hop!

Hello? Is this thing on?

I've kind of been an absentee blogger lately, haven't I?  I actually have a good reason.  I really do.  Kids.  My kids specifically.  We've been wearing out the sprinkler and the $20 blow up pool.  Oh and we decided to make an impromptu overnight trip to the campground too.  That was an adventure.   The lake is still 16 feet above the regular Summer pool level so finding available campsites was interesting.  Not to mention that this is the third year that none of the lakes "beaches" were open.  Ah well... we've been having fun anyway!

It's the FINAL countdown!!

Today starts week 35 of the pregnancy!  I couldn't be more excited.  Well, yes I could.  If my due date was today and I was already at that last week.  I don't want her to come any earlier than she wants too (or needs too), but I'm ready!

I thought that finding out so soon in the pregnancy that we were going to have another little one was going to mean that the next 8-9 months were going to drag by super slowly.  I was so wrong!  I blinked and now we are almost to the end.  Next week is my last "2 week" check-up.  After that I'll have to start going every week, b-u-m-m-e-r...  I also have a follow up glucose test next week.  Yes, I have to do that shit AGAIN!  The doc just wants to make sure that the GD isn't getting worse.  I hope he says it's all good and I can eat any old thing I want.

I really didn't think that I was eating that many sweets and sugars, but have you ever actually looked at the labels of foods?  I didn't.  When I actually started to pay attention to serving sizes and the like I was dumbfounded at the amounts of carbohydrates in some foods.  And damn that high fructose corn syrup is in EVERYTHING, isn't it?  Trying to determine what type of sweetener is acceptable is a whole other ball game.  I've resulted to just drinking water.  Plain, boring water.  I still cheat.  I bought a 2 liter of Cheerwine a couple of weeks ago.  That stuff is awesome.  You pretty much have to live in the Southeast part of the U.S. to get it.  You can order it online, but it's kind of pricey.  I only paid $1.25 for the 2 liter.

You know what else has me itching to have this pregnancy over?  The HEAT!  We're going on our 12th straight 90F weather day.  Oh and our A/C unit... it's barely hanging on.  It wasn't working at all until last Tuesday when the HVAC guy came to service it.  We thought it was just in need of some freon, but alas... we were wrong.  He said that it was near fully charged, but there were two different sensors that had gone bad.  Word is still out on how much that's going to cost us and when they will actually be put in.  He had to order them.  Until then though, he unhooked one and said we'd be fine.  The second sensor is some kind of ambient outside thermometer sensor.  This one does something I'm unaware of and means that every so often we have to turn the unit off.  Leave it off for about 20 minutes, then turn it back on.  Happy, happy, joy, joy.

Basically it all boils down to this....  I need to give birth and we need a big, ginormous pool!  Simple, right?

Vlog Talk 6.7.11

This is my first vlog in the Vlog Talk meme brought to you by Jessica at My Time as Mom, Elena at Mommy is in Timeout, and Kate from Mommy Monologues.

Every week they give a few prompts for your vlog. One of this weeks was: A toy your child(ren) play with that drives you up the wall and why.

Artistic Seaside Embroidery

I got a surprise in the mail today!  My awesome Aunt Pam embroidered a diaper bag for me!  She (and my Uncle Gary, too!) run Artistic Seaside Embroidery in beautiful Ormond Beach, Florida.  A quote from their website: "We are a custom embroidery/screenprinting company. We offer our customers specialty and corporate apparel that will complement their business. We offer a variety of apparel from corporate wear to sports wear and uniforms."

I love, love, love my new diaper bag!  How super cute is it?  I mean, really?!  I'm already thinking of how I can use it even after I'm not in need of packing around baby stuff.

You must visit her website.  She doesn't just do diaper bags either!  She can do corporate logos, blankets, hats, monograms, other specialty items like anniversary or wedding gifts.  Check out some examples of their work here.

Fake Rain

I had almost forgotten how much fun a sprinkler could be.  The kids have been using our old fire hydrant sprinkler since they were just toddlers.  It is actually designed to be used by wee little ones anyway.  The hydrant makes for cute photos, but they've pretty much outgrown it.

I found an 8-in-1 sprinkler at Walmart for less than $5. Just a regular garden variety sprinkler. The kids are in L-O-V-E with it! Eight different ways for them to be amused. Loads of time for me to be amused at them. Of course, having a pool would be infinitely better in so many ways, but old school sprinkler play is so much more fun!

Woo it's still H-O-T Wednesday!

First let me state that I in fact DID NOT buy a bikini for my 9 year old daughter.  We haven't had a need for bathing suits since last Summer and if your house is anything like our house, then things tend to go missing before a season rolls around again.  After searching high, low, and in the basement, I could not find the top for her bathing suit.  Since she was able to find my lovely green bikini that I obviously can't wear right now ('cause you know I'm just too sexy for it at this time) I tied it on her as best I could.  She wasn't happy with it because it was too big, but it served it's purpose.

Here's to what's sure to be a sweltering June!
